AL JOURGENSEN (ALSO KNOWN AS "MINISTRY", "LARD", "REVOLTING COCKS", ETC.)
(Note: This interview was conducted through email, and is shown here exactly the way it was received. Enjoy.)
Rutherford: So, the new album, Animositisomina, how is it different and how is it similar from albums in the past?
Al: THE DIFFERENCE IS IT DOESN'T SUCK. THE SIMILARITY IS IT DOESN'T SUCK.
R: You and Paul (Barker) recorded almost all of the music on the new album without the help of many other guest musicians. Was this a conscious effort, to strip down the music and not muddy it with guest musicians, or was it just something that happened?
A: WE JUST DIDN'T WANT TO SHARE OUR DELI TRAY WITH ANYONE ELSE THIS TIME. DAMN, THOSE BBQ CHICKEN WINGS ARE TASTY.
R: I always compared Mike Patton from Faith No More to you, because you both seem to have your hands in so many different projects at once. With Lard, Ministry, RevCo, etc., is this a way to reinvent yourself every time, or is there a much more simplistic reason for the change ups? Do you get bored easily?
A: I DON'T REINVENT, I REGURGITATE. AND I DON'T GET BORED, I GET BURPED.
R: And when you would create something for Ministry, say over RevCo, do you have to put yourself into a different mentality for that particular band? Or is the work much more related than that?
A: YES. I SWITCH FROM A BEAUJOLAIS TO A MERLOT.
R: You are really the godfather of the industrial rock revolution, yet most people aren't aware of it because they got into it in the early '90s, with bands like NIN. And I know you worked with Reznor when he was just starting out. Has it ever been disheartening to you to see these bands come up, learn from you, and then get huge?
A: IT'S ONLY DISHEARTENING TO KNOW THEY SUCK!!!!!!!
R: With 1996's Filth Pig, there was less of an industrial sound, and it had a much calmer feel to it than Ministry albums of the past. The feedback from fans was that they were somewhat disappointed with the outcome. Do you ever feel pigeonholed into making something that is expected of you, or do you just approach it with a "fuck all" attitude and do what you want? Also, did the way Filth Pig was received change the way you make music after it?
A: "PIGEONHOLED". NOW THAT SOUNDS EROTIC!!! I THINK IT'S PRETTY EVIDENT THAT I ONLY GIVE A FLYING FUCK WHAT PAUL AND I THINK ABOUT IT,.. AND THOSE DAMN TASTY WINGS!
R: In 1995 Texan pigs raided your studio, Waco-style. What the fuck was that like?
A: IT WAS RAPTUROUS; JOYOUS; THE HIGHLIGHT OF MY LIFE, TO BE HANDCUFFED NAKED ON THE FLOOR, WHILE SOME IGNORAMUS COP ATE ALL MY CHICKEN WINGS!
R: Things are pretty fucked up in the world right now, and in other interviews I've read with you, you seem to be a very verbal man. Got any opinions on this subject?
A: I AM NOT VERY VERBAL; I'M VERBY VIRILE.
R: What is the most important thing you've learned by working in the music industry?
A: DON'T DRINK WINE WITHOUT A CORK!!!!!!!!!
R: In what ways would you say Ministry has grown and changed since its beginning?
A: WE STARTED OUT BOYS, AND BECAME MARINES.
R: In a recent interview you said that you don't listen to a type of music, that you listen to good music. Do you cringe, then, when something you do gets lumped into a group, or gets a label slapped on it? Similarly, can you tell me why all of your work, as well as everyone's work, can be found in the fucking "ROCK/R&B" section at every Best Buy across the goddamn country?
A: FIRST OFF, I DON'T CRINGE. SECOND, MAYBE BEST BUY FOUND OUT I AM LIVING A DOUBLE SECRET LIFE AS JAMES BROWN.
R: Do dogs have lips?
A: YES, OF COURSE. NOW I ASK YOU THIS BACK: DOES A POPE SHIT IN THE WOODS? IS THE BEAR CATHOLIC?
R: Do you know who killed our editor, Wayne Chinsang?
A: I PUT UP THE MONEY FOR IT, BUT I DIDN'T DO IT.
R: What can we expect from Al Jourgensen next?
A: A RUN FOR THE PRESIDENCY ON THE "WHAT THE FUCK IS HE TALKING ABOUT" PLATFORM.
R: When it's all said and done, and you're dead and buried, what do you want people to say about you?
A: SEE YA, WOULDN'T NOT WANT TO BE YA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
