ANDY MACDONALD
interview by darby o'gill

TONY WHO? PLEASE. HE'S SO LAST YEAR. NOW, ANDY MACDONALD, THAT'S WHERE IT'S AT. YEAH, HE MIGHT NOT HAVE A VIDEO GAME AND NATIONWIDE TOUR NAMED AFTER HIM THE WAY TONY DOES. BUT HEY, DID TONY GET TO TALK WITH OUR VERY OWN DARBY O'GILL? NOPE. ANDY SURE DID.

Darby: What first got you started in skateboarding, and did you think you would ever take it to the level it has gotten?

Andy: I was shooting hoops one day when this kid came rolling by the courts on a skateboard. I asked to try his board, and I was hooked. I've always skated simply for the pure fun of it. I had no idea that I'd be lucky enough to one day make a living doing it.

D: What was your biggest inspiration, both in skating and otherwise?

A: With skating, it was all about keeping up with my older brother around town. He also skated, and was better than I was. In life and otherwise, when I was pretty young my mother taught me who Mohandas Gandhi was and what he stood for. He's been one of my biggest inspirations. If I can be half the man he was, I'd be stoked. If Gandhi skated, he would have ripped.

D: What is a "Boom Boom HuckJam" (BBHJ)? Does it have anything to do with Huckleberry Hound?

A: That's like asking what a "Lollapalooza" is. It's just the name of our tour. We "huck" ourselves into the air, and pretty much "jam" session the whole time-- sort of like a jazz band.

D: What's the hardest trick you've ever pulled off, and how long did it take for you to master it?

A: It took me a good six years to land my first 540 McTwist. I've got it down now, but it took many years of actual blood, sweat, and tears to make it that first time.

D: What movie is better: Thrashin' or Gleaming the Cube, and why?

A: I'm gonna go with Gleaming the Cube on that one, because at least there was some semblance of a believable plot. With Thrashin', it was just so hard to believe that there were rival skater gangs out to get each other.

D: Do dogs have lips?

A: Yes. My dog Nishi has the cutest lips that a dog could have.

D: What's your highest score on Tony Hawk's Pro Skater?

A: I couldn't tell you. But my best score on Asteroids is just under 40,000. I've got the old stand-up arcade game in my garage.

D: In your line of work you must take some pretty hard falls. What's your worst horror story?

A: I once flew off the side of the ramp and straddled a picnic table. Then, while I was laying on the ground thinking I had a broken femur, the board-- which had shot off the top of the ramp-- came down and hit me in the head. I was 15 years old. My dad has the whole crash on video. It's pretty funny to watch.

D: When you design a new Andy Mac deck, what goes into the design process?

A: I just came out with my own line of boards. They are made by Powell, so you know that 26 years of experience went into them from the start. From there, I tested the wheels to make sure they would hold up while doing lots of slides. Then I jumped off sets of stairs over and over to make sure I couldn't crack the board or bend the trucks. When I was satisfied, I put my name on it. You can get Andy Mac Skateboards at Costco.

D: What would you be doing now if you weren't skating?

A: I'd probably be a skydiving instructor. In any case, it'd be something fast and outside.

D: Why should people come and see you at the BBHJ?

A: I guarantee you'll see something you have never seen before. It's visual over-stimulation.

D: Is it crazy being a part of something as big as the BBHJ? With all the touring and set-up? Or are you used to it by now?

A: I'm used to the travel by now. I've been doing it as a pro for ten years. It's a little crazy to think that we sell-out shows to 12,000 people some nights. It's great that there are that many people into skateboarding.

D: Maybe it should be called Andy MacDonald's Boom Boom HuckJam. You ever think of that? Maybe you should suggest it to Tony and see what he thinks.

A: Andy Mac's Boom Boom HuckJam does have a certain ring to it, don't you think? And Tony is getting pretty old these days. Maybe I'll ask him how he's feeling after this tour is done.
