THE BETA BAND - HEROES TO ZEROS
CD review by our zero-hero, Wayne Chinsang

The third album from the Beta boys from Scotland hits the ground running, and leaves 12 amazing tracks in its dust.

I've liked everything The Beta Band has ever done, including their self-titled debut that even they themselves admittedly loathe. But this is a far cry from that album. Hell, it's a far cry from their previous album, Hot Shots II.

We are given a rich, thick album that is more instrumental than previous work, and even feels orchestral in some parts. Self-produced and practiced for 18 months before even hitting the studio, Heroes To Zeros is exactly what the fellas wanted. And it is damn fine.

From the horn-saturated "Assessment", to the poppy "Easy", to the drum-induced panic of "Out-Side", this disc has a song for every mood and mindset. And the layered madness of "Liquid Bird" is so meaty and dark... I love every note of it-- it's a goddamn masterpiece.

The best part of The Beta Band is that they cannot be explained or slipped into a genre. Whenever I try, I'm at a loss for words. The Beta Band is everything. And so is Heroes To Zeros.
