PHOENIX - ALPHABETICAL
CD review by Fphatty Lamar

This Phoenix is buttery, meaning their new album, Alphabetical, has a smooth, velvety quality to it. They're what I imagine room temperature, rich, sweet-cream butter would sound like if it could sing.

Alphabetical’s music is only as complex as it needs to be; the tracks are layered with a variety of interesting beats and instruments-- including claps and wind chimes-- but manage to avoid overly distracting production. It’s one thing that this album is musically well-rounded. It’s another that these four Frenchmen recorded something so well-rounded in their basement.

Although Alphabetical isn’t the most lyrically profound album in the world, it’s a good, solid listen from start to finish. And not only is it a creation with integrity, it is, more importantly, something that you’ll listen to more than once.

So pull out a thick slice of sourdough bread, pop it in the toaster, and turn on some Phoenix. You won’t need any butter.
